We live in the era of great technological advances. Therefore, the needs for raw materials are constantly increasing and the dangers threatening the environment are constantly growing. Many of the minerals we use on a daily basis are components of the Earth’s crust, not synthetic chemicals and for this reason they cannot be replenished or reproduced.

 

These minerals remain in the environment and living organisms absorb them along with water, air and food and it is difficult to get them out of their organism. This phenomenon is called bioaccumulation and causes great concern to environmentalists. Several cases of poisoning have occasionally been recorded in several countries in the past, caused by heavy metals, while some of them, such as cadmium, are considered carcinogens.

 

By recycling batteries and any other materials that can be recycled we restrain the dumping of dangerous waste in landfills. Accidents like fires from flammable waste are very likely to occur in landfills. Metals which are volatilized during the combustion of waste due to the rain end up in the ground and water.

 

The runoffs from landfills are also a problem since they pollute the aquifer. By recycling batteries we prevent all these bad effects from the disposal of batteries in landfills, protecting at the same time nature efficiently.

 

Moreover except from heavy metals, batteries contain corrosive acids which can also be reused. These acids are harmful and cause problems to human bodies especially eyes and skin. Disposal of batteries in landfills facilitates their release into the environment.
