What is AFIS?
AFIS (recycling portable batteries) is the Collective Management System for portable batteries that has been approved by the Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment under Law 215 (I)/2002 and specifically the Regulation KDP125/09 for the management of portable batteries (up to 2000 grams).

Battery management is the collection, temporary storage, transportation, sorting and treatment for recycling.
What is battery recycling?
Battery recycling is the recovery and utilization of the consistent materials of batteries. More specifically it means the extraction of the batteries’ metals and their reintroduction to the natural and economic cycle by reusing them for new batteries and other products. The ultimate goal of recycling is to save energy and raw materials and to reduce the volume of waste.
Why should I recycle? What do I personally gain?
The benefits of recycling batteries are common for all. We create a better environment for ourselves and our children. In all European countries battery recycling is done for the following reasons:
-Environmental protection and enhancement of the quality of life
-Reduction of the volume of waste that ends up in landfills.
-Saving of raw materials
-Energy saving
-Creating new job positions
How can I contribute to the protection of the environment from the harmful substances in batteries?
Search for the special recycling bins for used batteries and have your old batteries there in order to be recycled. By doing this, you protect the water and the soil from harmful substances, protecting at the same time the public health.
 
Which batteries can I throw in the AFIS recycling bins?
All kinds of batteries up to 2000 grams whether they are primary (disposable) or secondary (rechargeable). The type of device from which the batteries come from (mobile phones, camcorders, computers), does not matter.   
Where can I find battery recycling bins?
The placement of battery recycling bins nationwide has already begun. There are bins in municipalities, other public buildings, shops, supermarkets, schools, public installations, hotels etc. Contact us to help you find the nearest bin in your area.
 
Who covers the cost of the collection and recycle of batteries in Cyprus?
The cost of the collection and shipment of batteries for recycling and the cost for their treatment is covered by the importers of batteries or the importers of equipment with embedded batteries. The Collective Management System for portable batteries AFIS Cyprus Ltd was created by these importers, to operate the collective battery management system.   
 
Are there any specific targets regarding the alternative management of batteries?
The European legislation which was revised in 2006 defines the targets for collecting and treatment batteries for all the Members of the European Union. The Directive provides for:
25% per weight of the portable batteries placed in the market in the country must be collected until 26/9/2012
45% per weight of the portable batteries placed in the market in the country must be collected until 26/9/2016
